A recent study indicates that patients who discontinue new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals buying these medications should be cognizant of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a reversion to starting mass in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with other pills.
Researchers note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally have a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Experts believe the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the accelerated regain.
These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."
A Lifelong Disease?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
People who have stopped the jabs describe a powerful return of cravings.
"It was like a switch activating and you become extremely hungry," recalled an individual.
The struggle is worsened if users have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while the jabs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated behavioural support.
