Right-leaning reactions to the partial release of documents involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with certain backers of the previous administration highlighting the noticeable presence of former President Clinton and additional Democratic figures in images, while others lamented how extensive censorship cast Donald Trump and GOP members in a negative manner.
Administration Justifies Redactions with Strong Rhetoric
Justice Department officials justified the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “Never in U.S. the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been so open with the American people about such a delicate law enforcement issue,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a six-page memo outlining the redaction process.
Questions Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's name and likeness are visible in some of the documents, the widespread redactions raise serious questions about the information may be hidden beneath them. A number of Republicans swiftly called for increased openness.
“The public are raging and walking away,” wrote Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the censorship violate the statute, and implied that a subsequent legislature may attempt to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, today’s file dump egregiously does not comply with both the intent and the letter of the law,” he continued.
A Faction of Rightwing Figures Swing Behind the Disclosure
But, some rightwing pundits and former President loyalists swung firmly in support of the administration.
The release—from a DOJ led by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of documents that are entirely censored, and numerous of the men depicted in pictures have their faces blacked out.
Yet some do not, featuring high-profile individuals like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, in particular, enabled certain conservative voices to launch the offensive.
“It’s quite ironic how the Democrats wrongly claimed President Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to release documents that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” stated conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a female that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a girl in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Former President Spokesperson Issues Statement
Clinton has consistently stated he knew of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has not been accused to have participated in any misconduct. “The White House hasn’t been hiding these files for months only to release them at the last minute on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“This is about shielding themselves from what comes next, or from information they’ll try and hide permanently. So they can publicize as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photos as they want, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the statement added.
Broader Rightwing Commentary Seems Subdued
Nonetheless, overall discourse on the political right was comparatively muted following the release, especially when juxtaposed against the loud demands for action that came before the legislative approval to pass a law mandating the files' release.
The commentator, who recently secured press credentials at the Defense Department, had been one of the loudest advocates for a complete release. In February, she criticized the administration generally and Bondi specifically after a group of rightwing influencers were provided hard-copy folders of materials that included little previously unseen information.
